An historical fact for you.
The saying to which you are alluding dates back to 16/10/1859 when a US slavery abolitionist named John Brown along with 18 escaped slaves seized the government arsenal at Harper's Ferry in W Virginia.intending to start a slaves revolt. There was a wood yard nearby where some of the former slaves attempted to hold out when attacked by the US Marines under Col Robert E. Lee on the 18/10/1859. This was the origin of the phrase "Ni**er in the Woodpile" to which you allude. "Fly in the ointment" is a much more suitable phrase to use in the same situations and much less offensive in the 21st century. John Brown was tried and hanged on the 02/12/1859. About 1860 the song "John Browns Body" was penned to commemorate him as by this time he was regarded as a martyr.
