The Earth is Enough by Harry Middleton
The book is essentially an early memoir from Middleton's life. Young Harry was shipped off to the Ozarks to live with his grandfather and great uncle. He learned the ways of the land basically and an environmental spirituality developed. Middleton's book portrays the lives of four men and a small town beautifully. It helps you to appreciate the Earth--that it is indeed enough.

The Journeyer - Gary Jennings
It's a historical novel, fiction woven around history. It's about Marco Polo, but it includes everything that he was not able to legally have published at the time. It includes all the gore, the lust, the raw reality of all the different peoples he encountered, all the way from Italy to China.
This book is STUNNING! SUBLIME! It's over 1,000 pages long, and when I finished it, I was sad 'cause there was no more.
Jennings is a GENIUS! He's known for his Aztec series:
Aztec
Aztec Autumn
Aztec Blood
Aztec Rage
Jennings spent 12 years in Mexico doing research for his novels. He learned Spanish, and became fascinated with Mexican civilization, both ancient and colonial. If you read all the kudos on the back covers of his books, every one of them is true and not a one is an exaggeration.
I know I know, you said book - singular - but I snuck in several. Hey, they're by the same author. In all of his works (there's also Spangle and Raptor, hehe!), he does several years' worth of travel and research before he writes. Each book took long to create, oh but each was worth the wait! You can totally imagine what everything looks, sounds, smells, tastes and feels like. Everything.
Did I mention he's a genius, lol? I love everything I've read from him, but The Journeyer was my favorite.

I'm reading "Triumph of the Sun" right now. The first time I'm trying a Wilbur Smith novel, & it's brilliant. I'm loving it cos it's like a Merchant-Ivory movie & the detail is incredible.
"Day of the Jackal" by Frederick Forsyth & "The Eagle has Landed" by Jack Higgins are 2 faves for excitement & thrills.
For short stories, there's none better than Jeffrey Archer. Totally unpredicable !
"Thorn Birds" is the best classic fiction I've read.

The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix, for it was a refreshing diversion from the routine Fantasy Genre.
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, "It came as a bolt of lightning from a clear sky" (C.S. Lewis) Because it invented a genre.
The Four Agreements, as it made a profound impact on my life.
The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams, because it was one of the funniest novels I have ever read.
Anthem, Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhed by Ayn Rand; all works that influenced my writings greatly.

They changes all the time - it is impossible to say only one ever best book. The latest for me is Anchee Min "Empress Orchid" - really exciting, interesting and historical (the combination of the
last two is really a fortune to find). Now the view on culture of Chine is completely different (in a positive way I mean).
