Stick with XP for now. If you still want to change your Operating System go here www.ubuntu.com and get a free CD. For the money you save on Vista this Linux based Operating System is worth the hassle of learning it.
For the moment Vista is not world ready and can be a thief in the night.
Linux has always been free and will be a saviour to those who actually use it. Unlike Windows you can start using Ubuntu straight from the CD before you install it. I recommend this Linux based OS to one and all. And if you still want Vista then wait for a few years.
Linux can be had in all forms and flavours and is quite easy to learn how to use. But depending on what you go for be advised that Linux needs to be learnt before you go installing it as the mess made by novices can be awful.

Reverting back to XP from Vista:

Without knowing if you have store-bought Vista AND XP upgrade / full version Retail disks (not OEM) OR vendor (Dell, HP, etc.) supplied Vista AND XP Recovery Disks. You can't Mix & Match. You must use your PC manufacturer's XP Recovery disks to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP disk.

TIP: The Vista Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual for your PC FIRST to find out how to BURN your own set of Recovery disks.

IF Vendor Supplied:

Back up all personal data from your PC ("Backup" means: copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive). Then, follow the Recovery procedure in the Manual.

IF Store-Bought:

Back up all personal data from your PC. Then, do a store-bought Windows XP "Clean Install", for further instructions, go to: http://www.theeldergeek.com And, here's the "store-bought Vista to store-bought XP" Step By Step from Microsoft:

You don't give much context. Did you buy a new computer that came with Vista or were you running XP and bought a Vista upgrade?

If its the first case then you should persevere with Vista because installing XP would be way too expensive.

Never use an operating system from Microsoft until it has been out for at least 2 years.

Its easy just boot from XP disc and follow instructions.

oh, you will lose everything (unless you install it as a second operating system then it will ask you what you want to load each time you turn PC on)

If you install Microsoft VirtualPC 2007 you can install XP (or even 98) as long as you have a legit copy and run it as a PC on the Vista machine. This way you/she can swap amongst Vista/XP as you feel fit. Maybe when used to Vista the XP can be dumped.
if you download it from the link below. ( its free)

Just boot from XP disc and follow instructions, but remember to backup all your info on CDs and then put them back in your computer later. The answer with the second operating drive is too tiresome.

Simply Reformat your Drive thus Dumping Vista (THE WORLDS WORST OPERATING SYSTEM) AND REINSTALL xp
