I've always had trouble protectng my PC; and I'd like to make sure I'm doing it right. This is my current lineup of protection software, but I don't think I have a good lineup... And I'm always thinking I have way too many programs, so... I'm confused.

Firewall:
Windows Firewall

Spyware/Adware:
Xoftspy
Ad-Aware SE Professional
Microsoft Defender

Anti-virus:
NOD32
Norton Anti-Virus 2007

I only use one thing to protect my computer, Kaspersky Anti-Virus. My computer is virus free and it consumes very little system memory while running. As far as removing spyware and adware I really like Spybot, it's free and works really well.

You have way too many programs, which makes you a paranoid.

I do have programs, but they've yet to catch anything except occasional e-mail worms. My list is:

* Norton Antivirus 2007 (licensed w/ subscription)
* Microsoft Defender (free, of course)
* Ad-Aware (haven't found anything serious yet)
* Spybot S&D (haven't found anything serious yet)
* Sygate Personal Firewall

I also have a Linksys router with built-in NAT firewall.

The most basic protection: don't download too much warez and that sort of ****. The more you download, the more likely you'll download something BAD. Also, configure your e-mail scanner so it'll scan every incoming and outgoing message for worms and such.

Haven't caught virus for YEARS.

first of all,if you are behind a router with NAT function or firewall you don't need a two ways firewall like ZoneAlarm or other firewalls and windows firewall is enough in this case,but if you don;t have a router,a good firewall like ZA or Norton is amust.

NOD32 is a very good antivirus,I have been using it for 4 yrs without any problems of viruses or worms.

Windows defender isn't good,but any way NOD32 has a good antispyware built in,so you just need another spyware like ad-aware or spybot to scan your pc regularly for spywares and ads,but don't put the antispyware in the real time scan as NOD32 is doing the job perfectly.

I use:
ZoneAlarm FireWall
NOD Antivirus
XoftSpySE antispyware
Never had virus\malware problems with this program. Remeber to update them. All defence costs nearly 100 $.

First get a better firewall:

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/

You can only run one AV - Nod32 will conflict with Norton - I would get rid of Norton.

Microsoft windows defender is a lot of rubbish even Microsoft say so, - so get rid of it.

Download this as a replacement for defender:

A part from this your OK.
