The skin as an organ will make certain vitamins (D3) that are not available in food but that are needed. The sunlight also when it comes in contact with the different parts of the eye, make certain neurochemicals that promote good mental health and balance. People who suffer from seasonal affect disorder (SAD) frequently have a lower level of theses chemicals and report sometimes severe depression in the winter months. Aside from medication, just going outside more or having special lighting equipment at home may help.

Vitamin D is absorbed threw the skin and the main way us humans receive it is exposure to sunlight. It helps us to regulate alertness and restfulness. That's why when people are not exposed everyday during the day they can have trouble sleeping. Its also the major cause of jet lag.
