Everything about fractions? Wow, that's a lot.

Fractions are any number that is less than one but greater than zero. They are usually expressed as decimals(like 0.5) or as a ratio of two numbers(like ½).

Fractions expressed as a ratio have two parts, the numerator, and the denominator. The denominator determines the total number of the whole, while the numerator determines the number of the parts taken. So for example, in ½, 1 is the numerator and 2 is the denominator. 2 is the total number representing the whole, and 1 is the part taken from the whole.

Fractions can be classified as similar and dissimilar. Similar fractions have basically the same denominator, while dissimilar fractions do not.

In adding fractions, you just combine the numerator and retain the denominator if the fractions are similar. If not, you just get the Least Common Multiple of the two fractions. For example, 1/4 + 3/4 = 4/4 and 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. The same rule applies for subtraction.

In multiplying fractions, you just multiply the numerators, then multiply the denominators. It's that simple. Example: 3/4 times 1/2 = 3/8.

In dividing fractions, you just reverse the second fraction (that's called getting the reciprocal) then multiply. For example, 3/4 divided by 1/2 = 3/4 times 2/1 = 6/4.

In simplifying fractions, you always have to reduce them to lowest terms, which means reducing both the denominator and numerator to numbers that don't have the same factors. For example, 3/9 in lowest terms is 1/3.

It's easy- A fraction is only a part something, Do you Know how to do simple division? Divide the parts into Themselves, 7/10s= 10 divided by 7, Your right it's not so easy, Imagine, your a number , (Think your a #1) ,then divide yourself in halve, What Are you? You are a .5, Just as in the above you are now a .7 all Fractions are reduced to decimals, sux don't it? sad but true,

a fraction is a number than cannot be expressed as a whole number. 1,2,3,4,5,6.... are whole numbers. but what about a number between 2 and 3? you might call 2.2 itself a decimal, but 2.2 is not really an EXACT number and can be an approximate. a fraction like 1/2 and a decimal like 0.5 both can mean the same thing, but someone who says 0.5 may have rounded a number that was 0.50000000000001. i hope you get the idea... i can't really talk to you about operating on fractions (like finding LCD for adding and such) because your question was very very broad. anyways, have fun.

ok......one day long ago........there was a number..................it's name was numer......but it got changed through the years as people started to learn in all the different languages they we'r learning but eventually they got back to numer...but by this time numer had a b....with him...cause that ment BETTER THAN EVER...and it was easier than ever to learn about numer and all the ways numer did things.....if you counted fingers and thumbs.....you had 10 numers..............if you had three oranges- NUMERS of oranges.....you could eat one,and give one away to a friend, and have one left,so everyone called them numbers because they found things better than ever
so iwas gonna have the orange that was left over......and my friend came over and said they tasted so good and he would like another.....well i asked numer 1 how can i make two oranges///////he said you cannot make two whole oranges............but you can make two pieces of one......so we cut the orange in half.......and saw the two parts could be shared..so it was explained and shown that number one could be 2 of 1/2 and 1/2.............or a part of.........whenever you see "of"..................it tells of parts OR it DE- notes
so numer as number 1 is really number 1/1............or 1 part of 1......or a numerator 1 and a denominator of 1
any number like 5 or 7 or21.............have denominators of 1
that means 5 has 1 part....so it is 5
but you also know 5 can be 1+4 or 3+2 or 2+3 or 4+1
and even six minus one can be 5..................all these ideas have denominators of 1 because we see them as whole numbers..........not parts .......if we see them as parts......we call them fractions of one .

1/2 is 1 of two pieces.or parts
2/3 is 2 pieces of something that has 3 parts
1/8 is one piece of something that has 8 parts
5/8 is 5 pieces of something that has 8 parts when it is a whole or complete unit......[unit usually means one]
so we can add numbers and we can add fractions of numbers..and we can add combinations of numbers and fractions1/2 plus one half is one or1 or 1/1
when we add 1/2 plus 3/4 we are adding two things that do not come from the same piecing or parts make-up..so we look for a simple common denominator............that is the de-notes...............so 2 and 4 can be represented by 4 or 8 or 12 or 16....but we take 4 because it is the lowest and simplest way to see the pieces or parts i/2 is really 2/4...if we we'er working with 8.then 1/2 would be 4 things of 8 parts.........................so 1/2 plus 3/4 is the same as 2/4 plus 3/4....or 5/4 or 1 1/4.or one whole thing and 1 part of 4
yes thats why quarters are parts of dollars
we can subtract them too.....if we always remember to use the lowest common denote
2/3 minus 1/4 is [by looking at the 3 and 4's] easily denoted as a system of 12's............or12 divided by3 is four times two or12/3 X2=8
and12/4 is 3
so 8 minus 3 is 5....so 2/3-1/4 is 5/12

just like numbers as whole numbers,,,,,,,,,we multiply and divide them......3x7=21 9x2=18 or 50 /10=5................fifty divided by 10 is 5 the/ sign shown as///////////////////////////////// isthe fraction sign......or denomerator...or division sign........if we make parts we divide

so we can divide fractions too....and multiply them
i/2 times 1/3 is1/6.................3/4 x 5/6 is 15/24 or5/8

2/3 x 2/3 is 4/9....................1/2x 1/4 is 1/8

if we divide.....we turn the last fraction upside down and multiply
3/4 divd by 1/2 is 3/4 x 2/1=6/4 =1 1/2
2 divided by 1/2 is 2 x 2/1= 4....................remember the two oranges that got eaten first?.........well they could have been each divided.leaving 4 pieces......have fun with numBers and de/notes....................there's more....with fun the best to ya
