OK what happens when u put the car into drive before you turn on the engine? dos it hurt the transmission?

No, the engine will not start with the car in Reverse, or Drive. The keyed ignition will only work when the car is in Park, or Neutral. This safety feature is engineered precisely to avoid damage to the transmission, or to keep the car from leaping forward when the starter is engaged.

The neutral interlock switch should keep you from starting in gear. Not to protect the transmission, but to keep you from driving into a wall.
