He was the son of King Uther Pendragon and rightful heir to the throne of Britain (not yet England) in the 6th Century CE. His incestuous son Modred or Mordred rebelled while he was away in France. The two wounded each other at the end of their battle. Modred died at once. Arthur was taken by Morgan le Fay, Nyneve and another sorceress to Avalon to be treated, but some say he died. Others say he is still at Avalon and will return when Britain needs him most. A French chanson said he ruled Fay or Fairyland after Oberon retired and went to Heaven at last. Charlemagne's paladin Huon of Bordeaux arrived 300 years after Arthur did and the two were at war over dominion of Fay. Oberon returned to make peace. Sir Thomas Malory wrote "Le Morte d'Arthur" in the 15th Century, not "The Once and Future King". That is more modern and by T.H. White.

Poet Thomas Malory wrote "King Arthur, 'Once and Future King".

There is a legend which says that Arthur is the Once and Future King of Britain, meaning that he is bound to return at some time in the future to reign again over all of Britain.

This was supposedly on his gravestone: "Here lies Arthur, the once and future king." They believed he would return to rule again. That's one of my favorite books. Did you enjoy it?

He was the first king of England that ruled by democracy, supposedly and that when he was killed by his own son, that when England needs him again he will arise from the Avalon and come back, once again to rule England.

Because, according to the legend, he isn't dead but in suspension on the magical isle of Avalon,(Glastonbury on our side of the gate,) under the care of the faerie priestesses. And will return, healed of his wounds in the hour of England's greatest danger.
