Hi there.
The answer is, it might - but it shouldn't.
As a community we catholics have been guilty of unworldly thinking, as an organisation the catholic church has been infiltrated and betrayed.
Paedophiles are drawn to where they can find victims. Expect to find them in schools, child voluntary groups and nowadays in local councils (to get access to orphanages and childrens homes). Back then, the ministries of the church were caring for children- this drew in the perverts. The church never thought of this, thinking only of looking after the weak - and has paid a heavy price. They also never saw the overall pattern because when caught, the perpetrator would confess their sin and beg forgiveness, so the matter rarely went much higher. As christians, we canot refuse forgiveness when asked - the mistake was to allow these people back into positions where children could be got at and to presume that the congregations were better not knowing.
Wrong!
Paedophilia is a disease, perpetrators should be utterly removed from temptation forever and monasteries are perfect for this, the church should have used them.
As christians, we owe each other total truth and any attempt to sugar coat or obscure the facts weakens us all.
So these people were criminals using the church to get at children, their superiors never realised all that was going on - all of them should stand down and return to the ranks, be replaced by hopefully wiser heads.
To those enjoying the discomfiture, your attitude does you no credit. This is a tragedy for all concerned. The money-grubbing circus it has now devolved into is nearly as damaging as what went before, it will help nobody.
Regards, Steve.

Honestly, I think a lot more than child abuse is causing people to flee the Roman Catholic church...it is hard to envision people leaving a belief because of the indiscretions of some and the blind eye exhibited by so many of the leaders...but one has just to take a tour of Rome to have their eyes opened to the paganistic religion Catholicism actually is and take that one step further, if we believe what we have been told about "paganism" then the abuse comes naturally....That said, I believe "paganism" to actually be a beautiful form of practising one's believe in the gods....you know, it is not widely publicized but the CBC did an exposure on the Jehovah Witnesses..in the documentary they talked of sexual abuse within the Tabernacles...children were raped, both male and female, by people of trust and when it was dealt with by the elders, they were made to believe that the abuse was their fault and to ask God for forgiveness..any parents who took it to the police and had the perpetrators charged were shunned by the church and no one was allowed to ever talk to them again..the perpetrators served jail time and were welcomed back into the church..so Catholics are not the only ones guilty, just the ones the media finds the most popular...both are evil religions and should not be taken for anything more.

I have been a Catholic but I changed my religion when I got married. I don't think the issue of child abuse affects Catholics except for the victims' parents and they, I'm sure, would remain steadfast in their faith no matter what happened. Most Catholics who left their religion left for some other reasons but not so much for the fact that a child has been abused by someone they know and trust.

A Catholic who makes use of birth control? What would you're saying to somebody who advised you that they're a vegetarian yet nonetheless consume pork? birth control cheapens the marital act. It destroys the customary objective of human sexuality, so it somewhat is a perversion with the help of definition. The solutions listed right here are purely fabulous. "I see not something incorrect with using any delivery administration . with the help of how , The Pope and his advice got here up with the no delivery administration concept." No, the Pope did not purely arise with it. this could be a coaching that Christians agreed on for a *very* long term. Martin Luther himself stated that birth control became worse than adultery and incest, working example. All Christians agreed with the Church up till the Nineteen Thirties, and meaning each and every Protestant denomination. Then the Anglican "church" buckled on the Lambeth conferences. just about each and every Protestant congregation observed suit presently thereafter. Protestants think of that certainty is a democracy. they are incorrect. Laura, i individually can not tell in case you're extreme or not. What would you're saying in case you lived in the 1800's and somebody advised you "Ohhh, that nasty old Gregory XVI, he's denouncing slavery, yet he's purely incorrect. The laity does not settle for it so it is not Catholic doctrine, because of the fact Catholic doctrine is and constantly has been a democracy." Edit: if your spouse isn't open to the opportunity of your Marriage being fruitful, you shouldn't be married in the 1st place. Marriage is initially a company and Sacrament to offer a healthy ecosystem for little ones. Her well-being problems are actually not so super that the little ones she would bear does not be enjoyed with the help of you, your spouse, and God. additionally, your intercourse *will* be better without using a condom or the pill. working example, sperm acts as an anti-depressant while "dispersed" (can not decide a thank you to place that, lol!) right into a woman.

No there are other facets of the Catholic church that cause people to leave.
My mum left because of the narrow mindedness shown to her as an unmarried mother in the early 1970s. My brother and I weren't brought up in the Catholic church. So Catholicism lost one member and two potential members. Three if you count my baby son, who would have been a Catholic if I had been one.
Tales of the brutality in the Magdalen Laundries and the Christian Brothers don't exactly endear people to Catholicism either.
Funnily enough though old habits die hard - my mum has been known to still say her Rosary, even though she'd never set foot in a Catholic church again.

If you pay attention a little more closely it's not only the Catholic church facing this ordeal. Rabbis and Reverends have been getting exposure too. Want a weblink with those stories? It just seems to be a greater exposure to the Catholic side because the victims (who are/were brought up Catholic) are the ones who broke the silence and brought it to the Nation's attention. I applaud them for that.
Will people lose their faith? No. As for me, I left the church for other reasons, but I never lost "my faith in God." I should resume going and just knowing that I am there to pray and worship our Lord and that's my whole reason to be there and to pray for the corrupt individuals in our world hurting children as well.

No, it won't. Its sad & terrible, but you need to understand that child molesters are not only Roman Catholic Priests but also the man at the shop on the corner. Also, there are millions of good, decent Priests who cannot be categorised on basis of other bad apples. Where i come from, not a Christian country, I'm happy to say that i personally know many many good Priests. I have seen & witnessed these holy men serve the poor, the sick and the abused. Its made my own faith deeper & stronger & i'm proud to be Catholic.
Old man above, would dowell to understand that Religion need not be about rituals & tradition (which makes it pagan for him) but a spiritual relationship between God (Jesus for me) & oneself. Its just a very personal friendship...whats so pagan about that? Be brave enough to listen for Him...and you will find Him!

good question.
my opinion has always been that they should let priest and nuns marry and have sex
The catholic church is full of hypocrites. The preach to people that they are not allowed to take contraceptives and go and have lots of kids, and on the other hand they don't allow the nuns and priest to have sex and multiply.
how many kids have suffered at the hands of frustrated old priests who take out their sexual frustrations on them
and nuns are no better....they can be wicked b***hes.
and im not meaning all of them, but i have witnessed cruel nuns and read plenty about them

You go to worship God, that's the main reason.
Those who commit child abuse cause great scandal.
In this case it is the song which is important and not the singer.
I know of people who have been weak and have fallen, that's their fault not the Church.
No, I would not leave.
Well said Faith.
