Because scientifically, women use both the left and right parts of their brains essential for mathematical and accounting skills. In contrast, men use only one part of their brains necessary for driving or map reading.

Women and Mathematics

According to the National Science Foundation (1982), wide differences persist in achievement and participation levels among students from different groups. Women have traditionally participated less than men in sciences, and members of minority groups have participated less and performed less well than whites on standardized science and mathematics achievement tests. Researchers cite a number of reasons for these differences, including unwillingness to study mathematics and science, social attitude, and perception of usefulness of the subject.

Experts Argue Why Fewer Women Hold Math, Science Jobs:

Although many do not agree, scientists say Summers had good reason to ask whether a man's "intrinsic aptitude" gives him an edge in engineering and science.

National statistics show that women earn only 15 percent of the PhDs in math and only seven percent of those in engineering.

Dr. David Greery, a psychology professor at the University of Missouri, said, “He took a stand and he made a point. And some people do not like to hear that. But universities are about discussing ideas that may not be popular."

Many studies find that, generally, men perform better at visual/spatial activities. They can visually think through problems with three-dimensional objects, which may affect their performance in physics and engineering, while females tend to be better at identifying faces and remembering words.

Neuroscientist Dr. Raquel Gur believes that a woman's brain is wired differently than a man's, which gives her an advantage verbally.

Neuroscientist Nancy Andreasen at the University of Iowa agrees that a woman's brain is different than a man’s, but she believes that the sexes are different because of society's influence.

Andreasen said, "I, as a young woman, was brought up to believe that I had great verbal abilities, but that I couldn't do science and math. You know, here I am , now a very successful scientist."

Some say educators need to find ways to help girls excel at math and science. But, as one scientist pointed out, finding solutions requires frank discussion, not a shouting match.

FEWER WOMEN IN TECH JOBS
According to preliminary results from an industry-wide survey just completed by WICT, about 18% of the technology-based jobs in the U.S. cable industry are held by women. That's down from 2005, when the WICT survey found women held 26.5% of corporate technology positions and 19.9% of all industry engineering jobs.

Women are NOT always good in math. And males are NOT always good in geographical sense. I am terrible in math, and very good in geography, and its associated sciences. It is simply a matter of individual differences. So, please, in the future, try not to generalize. I know of no "always" that exists.
