I used to relates to a verb. Something you used to do - It more means, "I once did this"

I am used to relates to a noun. It means "I have previously had this" (or felt this ... and yes a feeling is a noun)

i used to: describes an action you did regularly in the past.
for example: i used to eat ice cream every day, but it isn't healthy so i stopped.

i am used to: describes you in the present, it relates to habits of yours.
for example: i'm human, i'm alive and i'm used to playing ball every other day.

"I used to" is a past tense statement, as in, "I used to play drums, but I stopped last year". "I am used to" is a present statement, as in, "I don't even hear the traffic outside my bedroom window, I'm used to it now".
