2x + 3y = 700 ..... (1)
3x + 4y = 975 ..... (2)

From (1), x = 350 - (3y/2)

Put this value of x in (2)

3(350 - 3y/2) + 4y = 975
1050 - 9y/2 + 4y = 975
-y/2 = -75
y/2 = 75
y = 150

Put y = 150 in (2),

3x + 600 = 975
3x = 375
x = 125

x = 125, y = 150 is the solution

First equation:
2x + 3y = 700
2x = 700 - 3y
x = (700 - 3y)/2

Second equation:
3x + 4y = 975
3[(700 - 3y)/2] + 4y = 975
1050 - 4.5y + 4y = 975
-0.5y = -75
y/2 = 75
y = 150

First equation:
x = (700 - 3y)/2
= [700 - 3(150)]/2
= 125

so x = 125 and y = 150

OR

First equation:
2x + 3y = 700
3(2x + 3y) = 3(700)
6x + 9y = 2100

Second equation:
3x + 4y = 975
2(3x + 4y) = 2(975)
6x + 8y = 1950

First equation - Second equation:
(6x + 9y) - (6x + 8y) = 2100 - 1950
6x + 9y - 6x - 8y = 150
y = 150

Second equation:
6x + 8y = 1950
6x + 8(150) = 1950
6x = 1950 - 1200
6x = 750
x = 125

so x = 125 and y = 150

2007-07-15 22:08:53 · answer #3 · answered by Crammels 2 · 0 2

the answer is:
x=125; y=150

2x + 3y = 700
solving for x:
x=(700-3y) / 2

3x + 4y = 975
substitute in the above equation the value of x...
3 ((700-3y)/2) +4y =975

simplify the equation by multiplying bothe sides by 2
3 (700-3y) +8y = 1950
2100 -9 y +8y = 1950
2100-1950 = 9y-8y
150 = y ^_^

substitute this value of y to the first equation
2x +3(150) = 700
x = 125 ^_^

hope this helps...

x= 125
y= 150

3(2x + 3y = 700) = 6x+9y = 2100
2(3x + 4y = 975) = 6x+8y = 1950

subtract and you get y = 150

then substitute for y and solve for x

(1) 2x + 3y = 700
(2) 3x +4y=975

(3)9x+12y=2925
(4)8x + 12y=2800

x=125

3(125) + 4y= 975

375+4y=975

4y=975-375

4y=600

2x + 3y = 700 .....(1)
3x + 4y = 975.........(2)

from (1)
2x=700-3y
x=(700-3y)/2.....(3)

put this value of x in (2)
3(700-3y)/2 + 4y = 975

Multiply by 2
3(700-3y)+8y=1950

2100-9y+8y=1950
-y=1950-2100
-y=-150
y=150

Put this value in (3)
x=(700-3*150)/2
x=(700-450)/2
x=250/2
x=125

Multiplying the first equation by 3 we get,
6x + 9y = 2100......................Equation (3), say.

Multiplying the second equation by 2 we get,
6x + 8y = 1950......................Equation (4).

Equation (3) minus Equation (4) gives, y = 150.
Substituting, y =150 in Equation 1, we get,
2x + 3 X 150 = 700
i.e, 2x = 700 - 450 = 250
or x = 125.
So we have the values of both x and y, as 125 and 150, respectively. (Answer)
