To inflict terror, which means fear of living peacefully , to others . Using this fear will drain the will to fight it and would then get demands accepted by those who cannot stand up to or fight against the terror. They then would control the masses to inflict the beliefs of the terrorist in the ways that they see best fit.

Terrism is an unlawful act to creat fear or terror for an ideological reason.
Most terrorist have the fundemental goal of deterrance.
The act terrorism in west most especially US by the Arab is to coax by force the goverment of US out of Middle East by inciting fear to the citizenary who inturn well question the govt for the cause of such action.
They argue that the US foreign policy directed on them is an invasion of their domestic affairs.
They also deem it necessary to reterliate on the US for its & its agents indescriminate attack on their soil, family and way of life
This has nothing to do with religion, though some hide behide religious blancket so as to ganner semtimental sympathy.
Unfortunately most of the terrrorist now adays have one or two things in common. they are muslims or Arabs. this may not be unrelated with US policy in the middle East. Because history has proved that the direction of the US foreign policy determines area of world conflict.
In the vietenam it was gorilla warfare, USSR ideoligical Cold war ( due to USSR being super power too).
To the Arabs the US use to physically attack weak naions due to US military might, but when it comes to strong countries its diplomacy or cold war. ie of resent the case nuclear empowerment of Korea and that of Iran neclear enrichment.
The Olahoma bomber and the various highschool killing which are terrifying in themselves, were not termed as terrorism because of political & legal technicalities.
The truth of the matter is that terrorism is a hideous crime which must be stopped at all cost, regardless of the perpetrator.
The ducumentary farenheit 9/11 will shed more light on the subject matter. So is a little history of the coldwar, because the current state of world conflict affair has alot in common.

To pull all of these nations into one Islamic state, under Shari Law with one cleric in charge, controlling 40 % of world oil production, along with Pakistan's neclear weapons, then take on India, Turkey and move north, to finish off France, UK, Germany, etc. Once the EU has fallen The US will be next on the list.

To bend the government to its will by using innocent civilians as targets and creating an atmosphere of fear.
It amuses me that all the answers refer to Islam there are plenty of other terrorist organizations that are not Muslims like the IRA and the Basques .
9/11 wasn't the first terrorist attack on the world just the first one that showed America what Britain and Spain were up against but they didn't start a war to retaliate.

To drive the Americans out of Arab countries and save their land and oil and people. That is why there has been such an increase in "terrorists bombings" the last few years. Also why there will be a lot more of that even moving into America as soon as they can manage it. The US has Arabs hate Americans so much they are willing to die to avenge the deaths of their loved ones at the hands of Bush.

To kill as many Americans as possible and anyone who don't believe in their cause. Killing to a terrorist could be compared to a basketball game to others, It's entertaining.
A terrorist will kill himself, if necessary, in order to take as many lives as possible and expect to go to heaven with maidens awaiting him--go figure--how do we fight someone with this mentality--This war is like none other, these people don't mind dying........they have nothing on this earth to live for and strive for except KILLING..........
