I just graduated from highschool and I'm set for college... I start on Sept 5th... I was totally excited about it and i was going to romm with my bestfriend and now shes not going because she didnt meet the requirements so I'm kind of down on that. The college is a few hours away from home but I've also been thinking about taking a year off or maybe just going to the tech to get my basics done with and then transfering over to college later... I dont know what to do... I dont think I'm ready and money is a small issue... I was suppose to get a particular grant and didnt so now i have to do work study... which im not looking forward to... So I was thinking of taking a year to save up some money??? My family is totally against all this and just want me to go straight to college but I dont want to go unprepared and fail out within the first year... that wont give me much encouragement at all... So what do you think? Should I go and try it out? I have to live in a dorm for 2yrs at least..

It's too bad that your friend didn't get in, but in a way, it might give you a better experience. The biggest complaint I hear from students is if they feel that college was too much of an extension of high school, so you are really better off going by yourself and meeting new people and becoming the college student you can be without the high school baggage.

As for taking time off, it doesn't sound to me like you have a really good reason. Work study isn't so terrible; and it doesn't postpone graduation like taking time off would. You don't sound unprepared, just scared. Know that this fear is common, but you need to go ahead and start anyway, and you'll get over it.

Is it possible that all of the things you believe are problems right now are really just a reflection of fear? You are moving away from home, you thought you were going to be with your best friend and now that isn't working out and going from high school to college is a huge change. It's completely normal to be scared of something so new and different.

Just remember that nothing you do right now has to be permanent if you decide it isn't right for you. If you go to school and feel you aren't ready, you can always decide later to transfer to a school closer to home, take a year off and then return, or anything else you want to do.

This is a time to challenge yourself and see what you are capable of. You might fail. Chances are when you try something new you will fail a few times. But you need get back up and try again or try something entirely different. You have so much time to do whatever you want and get whatever you want out of life. If you don't at least try, you might really regret it.

I think you should definetly try it out...
though college is a whole different experience form highschool..it is what you make it...if you go in with determination to succeed...nine times out of ten you will..if u r worried about not being prepared..alotta kida think that...but their are alotta resources and ppl who will be willing to help u make the adjustment from highschool to college...theres a number of other grants you still have time to apply for...what about cal grant? check with ur college they might have scholarships you can apply for...
thens theres sites like ..fastweb.com
scholarshipexperts.com
scholarship.com...
dont give up just yet...if you dont like it after the first semester or year..then you can always leave..they cant keep you there if you dont pay...hope this helps...

Don't shortchange yourself just because your best friend won't be going. You owe it to yourself to go and try it out, maybe your family could help out financially so your work study won't be so hard. Make an effort and if you don't make it then go to a tech, that at least is better than no school at all!
Give it the best try you can and Good Luck!!
