Unless you have abnormally large hands an SG should be fine for you.

I learned on an SG special. It works fine, but there are some tuning problems towards the top frets. other than that, it's fine. I'd think about upgrading after a year or two, though.

The SG is a good choice for a beginner or anyone else.
