My university is regionally and nationally accredited. Is this standard for most universities?

As far as I know (and I've spent almost 30 years working in universities), there is no such thing as national accreditation of universities, although specific programs (education, business, etc.) tend to be nationally accredited. Regional accreditation is standard for any acceptable university. The significance of accreditation is that not only the school itself feels that it is doing a good job, but the broader academic community has approved what they are doing.

Not only standard, it is a necessity if you want an acknowledged degree.
