I mean...surely that is his/her job, right? Do people applaud you too when you are doing your job?

to be fair: I have only heard this happening on like holdiay flights, so a plane full of people on their way to, well Mallorca in my case, but Salou, Lloret, Greek Islands.... destination like these. But people do it, seriously! I was there, I heard it myself.

People applaud me for playing the drums. I'm sure flying a plane is more complicated. I think we should applaud everyone.....I'm off to circle k to applaud the spotty kid who always gives me my hot dog. See you.....

When the plane takes off smoothly and landing like a hawk menoevered by the pilot skillfully, most passengers in the plane will give an applaud with a great appreciation.

just come back from greek islands and I can confirm that some people indeed do clap. I think its mostly those who are a little nervous of flying and are just relieved that they are down safely. My flight was full of groups of 18+ all dressed in matching t-shirts with slogans on! I was very glad I was going to a different part of the island! They were very quiet on the way back, too much booze and sun!

Yes that is true ;) It is happening only in flights from England to other holiday destinations in Europe... but not the other way round....I suppose people are happy that they're finally ready to start their holidays and the pilot was the one who flied them there...I think it's a good gesture by the way ;)

I don't believe that they are applauding the pilot, I think that clapping for thanking god that they are still alive. Besides flying an aircraft with the responsability of so many lives is great in itself, so maybe they should receive more applaud.

Last time i witnessed that happening was about 1992 didn`t realise it still happens. never could understand why it was done, we were on time, very smooth take-off and landing, it was just like a really boring coach ride but everyone clapped? never happened on the way home so i can only assume that the majority of people were just glad to be on holiday, but, having said that, i do remember on take-off looking down the plane and feeling i was one of only a few passengers.......never seen so many heads go down below the headrest {maybe kissing their a**e`s goodbye)........................so it could be just sometimes you will travel with a lot of fearful passengers and they are expressing their relief.

I travel a lot and I find it only happens on carter flights when the people on board only go on a plane once a year for their holiday

Cause it takes on heck of a pilot to land a plane gently. It's not all about knowing or doing your job. When it comes to flying you also need "the touch".

Hmm . . . only time I've ever heard that is after a particularly rough flight. Gratitude for getting the plane down safely, I guess!

I have seen that happen and I joined in. I think it's because the pilot finally got them there.

I have rarely been on a flight that wasn't delayed.
