Absolutely. You should also get training. Find some acting classes. Improv, scene study, on camera, whatever you can. You can also try to do some student films, and other projects to get started. Try doing a casting search on backstage.com and actorsaccess.com to see what's in your area. Backstage charges to see all the info, but the initial search is free so you can see if there's anything worth paying for and actorsaccess is free until you want to submit for a job electronically and it's free altogether if you subscribe to showfax. You can search first and see if it's worth it for you in your location :-)

Good luck

Hi,

community theater is certainly a good way to get started, but if you are serious about acting, you will need some solid preparation. Since this question comes up a lot and to keep from having to write the same thing over and over again, I created a resource that you can go and download from my site: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com . Just go there, sign in and you will be able to download the 28-page ebooklet titled: What It Takes To Become An Actor.

That should get you started.

Good luck!

yeah, community theatre is a good way to start. you also might want to look into acting classes so you get as much experience as you can.

San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse puts you close to Hollywood-- and many of their productions move to Broadway. Off-Broadway is a better bet than LA Theater, but is a longshot.

Do know that more casting directors in LA, hoping to build their careers, live here in LA. Hell, look at Mali Finn's resume (one of the best casting directors ever). She found or resurrected so many actors' careers here in LA.

Moral: move to LA.
