There has been a great deal of resentment against Americans in the Middle East, for a very long time. A lot of that resentment comes from the USA's support of Israel against Palestine (in which you will find a lot of Muslim extremists--which is not to say that all Palestinians are that, or that even the majority of Muslims are extremists). Add to that the sense of sheer unfairness many people must feel against the absolute luxury most Americans have, in contrast to so much of the rest of the world, and you can see how a minority of very angry young men could come to see the entire country as their enemy. This was definitely intensified by the presence of the American military--even on sanctioned bases--in what are often considered Muslim holy lands, and how strongly our values differ.
This is only the tip of a very complicated iceburg, but those are some of the reasons enough terrorists were whipped into a frenzy of murderous resentment--enough of a frenzy to believe all Americans are evil, and that we all deserve to die, and thus that they were doing a "good thing" on 9/11. As if murder is ever a good thing.
Consider how many Americans want to now see Muslims as somehow subhuman, instead of recognizing the difference between most Muslims and the extremist terrorists. To our credit, even those biased Americans hardly ever go out looking to kill Muslims. But you can still see seeds of the blind resentment that could, in the other camp, lead to terrorist acts among a few.
And yes--I recognize that a few is still too many!

POWER and HATRED
Al Qaeda, The Taliban and other terrorist organisations and groups, thrive on power and hatred.
They crave the power to have domination over their own areas and use this to satisfy their numerous, illegal and immoral interests. They use this power to control the people and eliminate any opposition in their countries and will not let anyone stand in their way.
Their hatred is reserved for anybody who does not agree with their beliefs and who is seen as a spanner in the works. They have supreme hatred of America and to a lesser extent, Britain, because they interfered with the terroists plans and showed an arrogance in invading Iraq.
People like Bin Laden and Hussein are not reasonable people, so to attribute a method to their maddness isn't the easiest thing. How do you reason the unreasonable.
I guess there are similar elements the world over. If a person wants their way, the will be determined to have it no matter what. September 11 was the extreme of this. Everyday people can let things go and don't have the power and weapons to take serious action. Though, we wouldn't.
In Bin Laden and Hussein's case, for a long time they had total control over people and country. An arrogance is gained from this that is not easily erased. When people like America, decides to try to end that long held power, a certain eruption takes place, to show that the terroists are indeed serious.

The organisation that did this had an intense dislike for the western culture and way of living. To them it is a sin to live the way the western would do. Combine this with the history of the Arabian countries... how the western world has treated the society of these people and how the world views them. Their harsh conditions and the over abundance of the west's living conditions – it could have been a matter of jealousy.
There are many factors. You'll never understand them all and there's nothing you can do to neither prevent it nor change their minds.

Bin Laden has said that the US has no business in Mid Eastern affairs and has corrupted the culture. He believes the US has selfishly pursued its own interests, causing suffering to Muslims all over the region. He sees removing America from the Muslim world as a religious prerogative, and feels justified using any means necessary to remove the US. Despite him being a crazed, violent, and vicious leader he does have a few legitimate criticisms. Look at the US installing the brutal Shah of Iran and later the US's support of Iraq in the Iran-Iraq War. (Search online for pictures of Dickey Cheney shaking Saddam Hussein's hand. They are not fake.)

The goal of terrorists is to attack and destroy what they believe stands in the way of their goals, and to use fear and terror as a tool/weapon to accomplish those goals.
The US has made many enemies over the past 50 years. Some of those enemies attack us. We incur a major foreign terrorist attack on the average every 7~9 years, since the 1970s.
That was just the next scheduled attack. By fanatics -- so logic is not a way to explain it.
Their goal was obvious -- to hurt Americans, and thus provoke fear and terror in those who witness the atrocity.
They miscalculated, and got rage instead of fear.

Sick leaders, saying we are the anti-Christ and we will try and overthrow all goverments. It takes a leader who will brain wash their follows.
Just look at the people that Jim Jones got to drink his kool aid and die because someone was coming to get them.
