i have just purchased a second hand JVC mini note with which it came with a portable CD Rom. I was wondering whether i bought a DVD rom that i could watch DVDS on it. I try to watch small movie clips that i have from my digi cam. It plays them but doe not like it too much

A CD-rom drive is not sufficient to play full motion video back in real time. Neither is a DVD drive, unless the video is a DVD and/or first encoded and compressed in the MPG-2 format, which makes the data much smaller. However, CD-Rom drives were never designed to play back video. Video-CDs and MPG-4 videos (stuff you would download from iTunes for example), you should be able to play back from a CD, though.

So the next step is to purchase an external DVD drive, if you have the ports on your computer. (firewire or USB2 ports, as USB (1) ports are not sufficient to send video data through) If you do not have these ports, then your next option is to purchase a PCMCIA card that creates a USB2 or Firewire interface to the computer.
