Performance of the two are pretty close. If you have a good deal on the 7900GS, take it.

Edited--- I added an other helpful website.
Both cards are really good. And both use lots of watts and produce lots of heat. Good thing you sticking alway from vista it blows for gaming and compatibility at least right now.
Either card will do great.
I think the 7900 GS is a little better for sure but cannot play DX10 games which is not a big deal right now and you say you mostly play older games at the moment anyhow.
I just found this and it backs up my claim you can also click on the box and look at the FPS yourself. I know its a over clock battle on this site but they also have info on the cards without over clock and if you read this page the 8600 GTS is a little slower to begin with even without over clocking.

But if you want a super stable videocard that makes a lot less heat and will still run about as good as a Geforce 7900 GS you can go for an ASUS EAX1950 Pro video card.
If you already have the 7900GS then stick with it for sure but if your planning on getting the 7900GS or the 8600 GTS I would get the ASUS EAX1950 Pro over any of those two any day. Three of my friends use the ASUS EAX1950 Pro and none of them have any problems and there case temps stay low even with 2 case fans. Not to mention that the ASUS EAX1950 Pro is fairly cheap and is pretty powerful itself without any over clocking.

well, for your current needs, the 7900 would do fine, but if you can spare 70 rebate, then go for the 8600. Down the line when you have some newer games it'll come in handy.

Have you thought about the XFX GeForce 7950gt xxx? A very powerful card but it is a bit pricey. I dont know how much it would cost for you but here in Australia it is $380-$400.
The core is 610Mhz and the memory is 1.6Ghz. And its heatpipes so no fan plus its 512mb.
But if you are playing older games then the 7900 GS.

I think 8600GTS its new and DirectX10 compatible plus it has better features and graphics and you should also install a AGEIA Physics Accelerator so it improves the graphics. If you really want the latest of all or not really the latest but the powerfullest then buy the nVidia GeFORCE 8800 GTX Ultra. You should actually use Vista and search for a driver for your Scanner but my camera that's from 2001 is still working and can be used on vista.i think your scanner can work too.

Stick with your older WindBlows O/S. I moved to the nVidia 7600 with 512 MB memory on a Dual-core Tforce MB. I just want video capture. That requires as much horsepower as gaming, though. My next stop, a KVM Digital switchbox.

for sure, you're after a chain 8 GeForce in case you're a gamer and attempting to "destiny-data" your laptop. properly suited, for sure, would be to pass to the 8800GT, yet it somewhat is extremely impossible as this is a homewrecker of a value for a video card. Now, you will would desire to ditch the sequence 7 GeForce selection and look on the sequence 8 (totally on the grounds which you prefer to play hyper-reasonable video games e.g. Crysis). properly suited which you presented out of all the above is the 8600GTS. This has the utmost cost, yet it somewhat is the single which you will possibly verify will spend the longest time on your laptop over each and every of the others. i wish this courses you in the suited course to enlightenment, Pat.
