When you're rushing to save the entire world at the last second, you need to be cold and calculating enough not to stop and help an old man out of the road.
(As Susan observes in Pratchett's "The Thief of Time".)

Lobsang: "You mean you need cool calculating bastards to save the world , do you?"
Susan: The cool calculation does help, I must admit."

I don't want a passionate or wildly enthusiastic surgeon.
Or airline pilot.

Now for cooks, lovers and painters, some more passion may indeed come as the top priority.

The case for soldiers is interesting.
"The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." (Patton)
Calculating is best, but it requires a certain hot passion to want to be there at all.

Me, I'm definitely closer to the cool calculating end of the spectrum.

Cold. If something is cold, you can always wrap it in something to get warm, or at least to the temperature of the wrapping item. Think humans. I'd rather live in a cold climate, because if I'm cold, I can just pile on the coats & blankets, even if (for example) there is no electricity. On the other hand, if you live where it's warm and the electricity goes out, how are you going to stay cool? Is everybody going to take turns spinning the fan blades? Same goes with food. Cold preserves food for longer. So a piece of perishable food would last longer in a cold envionment than a warm one. Of course, exluding that the world's climate has changed, and that we still have power, cold is still better. It's much easier to throw on a coat while walking out the door to go shopping, go to work/school, etc, than if it were hot, where you'd want to find an air conditioned area & really cold water.

On a hot day a cold drink is always better than a hot one.

On a cold day there's nothing better than a hot chocolate.

Temper is much better cold than hot. Affection is better hot.

Since you put this in "philosophy," I won't talk about which you need for a compress when you are injured. I never remember.

Cold is always better than hot, unless one is at the beach, and then only occasionally is hot better.

Cold is better - When you want to stop something from continued cooking, eating ice cream, long cold drink. When you want to see the different designs in the snowflakes or go ice skating or ice fishing. Not good for running around in a speed-o or bikini unless they matched the color blue. Stopping swelling in tissue. Making snow angles and snowmen. Playing duck, duck, goose. Horseback riding.
Traveling.
Hot is better - To relax muscles, hot cup of soup, coffee, hot food. I prefer a hot to trot man to a cold one. A nice hot cuppa tea. For baking. Running around in a speed-o or bikini/ thong. Swimming. Horseback riding. Boating, fishing. Not to have to shovel snow or dig your car out of the snow. For starting your car first thing in the morning. Traveling.
Off hand that is it for me ...

When the person you love does something to hurt you. Being cold or stone-like helps you get through the hard times. Then when the good times come, you can let their love and kindness warm you up again.
