There is nothing really different about how they mate compared to most other mammals. Maybe your friend has them confused with another animal. Pandas are very difficult to study because they live alone (solitary) in very remote regions of China but there is some documentation about their mating habits. Their reproduction rate is not high because the males and females only come together while the female is receptive, which is usually less than 1 week each year. It is a case where a lot of different factors have to be just right during a short period of time. Zoo Atlanta has a pair of pandas but they have never mated on their own. The female finally got pregnant via artificial insemination after several attempts by zoo staff (remember, they only got one chance each year). Her beautiful cub Mei Lan will be a year old soon. According to the panda experts at the zoo:
Reproduction
Giant panda females generally only come into estrus once a year, during the spring.
The entire estrous period may last from 12-25 days, but peak estrus or receptivity only lasts for about 2-7 days.
Female behavior changes noticeably during estrus. Initially, scent marking increases greatly.
As the estrous period progresses, the female will bleat and urinate more frequently. Some females also play and splash in water, roll, and walk backwards.
Closer to peak estrus, the female begins to chirp, raise her tail, approach males, and finally show lordosis (the posture used during mating).
In the wild, males are drawn to females by their scent marking.
Males congregate around the estrous female and compete for access to her. Usually, the dominant male will mate with the female. In the wild, as many as five males have been observed to gather around one estrous female.
If you are interested in pandas you should visit the Zoo Atlanta website. Besides great information, there is a live webcam that shows the pandas playing, eating, sleeping , etc. Mei Lan is really cute and quite fun to watch!

Panda bears mate just like the other similar male animals. Just the female is in a crouching, head-down position as the male mounts from behind. The couple would be "fumbling around and trying to have the genital organs become properly aligned". Copulation time ranges from thirty seconds to five minutes, but the male may mount repeatedly to ensure successful fertilization.

Yep. They don't mate male and female. They mate male and male. haha (just kidding)
Seriously, what's the difference. You got a male and a female together, the male is trying to......well it's basically the same with humans and other mammals. Nothing different. Nothing special, anyway.
P.S. Pandas aren't real bears.

i know that the panda males have very small penises and it creates difficulties impregnating the females. Its also hard to get them to have sex.Hence their low birth rate. Aside from that they reproduce like normal mammals. In China once, in order to get Pandas to mate scientist once tried showing them videos of pandas mating. Panda porn ;p.

Panda bears are very very awkward when it comes to mating. They need a lot of help if they are being bred in captivity. They are basically really slow and uncoordinated when it comes to the "mechanics" of sex for them. Getting them to mate and actually conceive is rather difficult.

well all I know is that pandas like a lot of privacy when they mate, unlike most mammals, they don't care if they are being watched.
