We desire what we 'want' - We deserve what we 'need'. And what we want is not always what we need.

I have found that desires are the worst of all. We keep on thriving, running, gazing after our desires, whole life. Most of the time we even die without achieving it. We keep chasing our desires. In that life long run, we are caught off guarded. In the end bleeding, gasping for oxygen, with busted tyres and ribs, exhausted, with no one in signt to help us, everything, every situation and everybody turning their back and standing against us. Laughing at us and tells us "CHECK MATE" boy...
the game is over. Be ready to die. Even at that time we have some desire left in us, which we will not expose as we do not have energy to speak. So to me desires are enemy of everything.
Better we should keep working for betterment of our friends and the globe as whole. Developing friendship with everybody (including animals). Let us keep working and the things, situations and people of what we deserve will come automatically come to us. When is the question, which is very strange by nature. Don't expect anything from anybody and everything will fall in right place.

You see the desire leads one to act, and deserving is entirely related with the result comes out of the act. The result is further related with the efforts put-in to act, and accordingly the result achieved fixes what one deserves.
Finally I would say what we deserve is entirely in our hand, but surely it is not a meager desire, but a true will to act and achieve the goal we desire.

Deserving has nothing to do with it. We want what we can't have or we desire things that will satisfy some sort of need.
