It means they have started puberty most likely. They think they do not need their parents anymore so they want them to bud out. Also hormones start to kick in.

They are both wanting increased independence and are afraid of it. They test limits with their parents to be reassured that their parents will only let them do things that don't hurt them. They will also complain that the limits they want and need are unfair and criticize their parents because the teen feels insecure but wants to project an image of confidence.
Sometimes the attitude did not start in the teens. Some parents have been passive all along but now that their children are teens they can cause more of a problem; drinking, drugs, sex, driving, etc.
Some parents may have been too controlling and the teen has an increased opportunity to rebel. Also, there are stupid, liberal, elements in society that tell teens and their parents that teens have the right to do whatever they want to do.

lol thats a million dollar question :)
but basically i believe what we adults term as "attitude problems" is really more about teens trying to find their place among the rest of society. Besides the obvious hormone changes, they're transitioning from a kid, to an adult. Its a pretty big deal for them, they want to prove their independance and voice themselves as individuals, and we gotta be patient with them and let them find their way. Remember when we were kids, we didnt think we had attitude problems, we thought our parents were the ones with the problem lol The world around us may change, but teenagers will always be teenagers :)

Not all teens do, but the ones that do are just trying to find themselves. Let them make there own mistakes and learn from them they're just trying to grow up. Speaking as a teenager it's very confusing when your parents want you grow up and take more reasponiblity for your actions but try to control everything you do.

To me , it is the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. It is also peer pressure . The decision making was handled in the past and now they desire to make their decisions themselves and feel parents want to control the apron aprings a little linger which is interpreted as interference and not love and caring by the teenager.

Yep hormones, it's only natural, got to let it pass and hope they come out ok at the other end. And their brains are not developed properly either. My dad says we were the worst teenagers ever and wanted to kick us out of home, but suddenly we became 'normal' again (my twin sister and I). And thinking back gosh I was absolutely horrible. I am ready for when my children go through that stage.

well for one: thinking they are all grown up.
two: Since they are "bigger now" they think they don't need there parents to tell them what to do.
and three: they think they can do anything since they have this "I have a legal age" type of thing

i wish you be less general, but some teens are just in their teenage angst phase where they think they hate their parents.
I'm sure you felt resent towards your parents at one point.
