I and my husband live in San Francisco currently and used to live in NYC and LA. We both are full-time college students and gonna finish summer school on Aug 17. We want to go on vacation before Fall semester start. Any advice to go somewhere with decent expense?

Actually, we want to go to somewhere we've never been. We have been to Vegas, Napa, Santa Cruz, Reno, Lake Tahoe,San Diego, New Jersey, Connecticut. Probably we prefer to drive. Don't hate me for not leaving much choices. We like exciting places with fun and eye candy. :-)
Thanks to all of you.

Let's see -- I can think of two suggestions, but it might take a while to get into position for driving. The Seattle area is pretty nice, with Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Olympic National Park, etc. in that area. It would be a 12 hour drive to Seattle, so you might be better off flying to Seattle and renting a car from there.

Same theory for Bryce Canyon/Zion Canyon/Grand Canyon. You probably can fly to Las Vegas cheaply and rent a car from there.

Yosemite is spectacular, and the Monterrey Peninsula is pretty beautiful too. You could combine them into a week's trip.

Stay local:

Drive to Napa, Have a nice romantic spa /wine getaway. Buy a wine barrel to bring home as a remembrance.

Drive down or Fly to San Diego and play tourist to Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Stay at the Coronado Hotel, sit on the sand and smooch.Great Food all over the place. Take a drive to
La Jolla and have an ice cream while to shop the street shops.

Drive down or Fly into (SNA)Orange County Airport/John Wayne, rent a convertible, drive to Laguna Beach, Enjoy the last days of Pageant of the Masters, and The Saw Dust Festival and enjoy the almost end of the season beach. Stay at any of the wonderful hotels on the beach or just across the street.
