The exponential distribution governs the time to failure of a device, given that the device has passed its infant mortality stage and it has no (known) wearout mechanism, which is true for many semiconductors and passive electronic components.

The chi squared distribution is a special case of the gamma distribution, where the degrees of freedom d in the chi-squared distribution and the shape parameter k in the gamma distribution are related to each other by

d = k/2

The chi-squared distribution is often used for statistical tests on variance and for estimating the confidence intervals for variance data. I have also used the gamma distribution to estimate the average amount of interference that a pair of wires in a telephone cable suffers as a result of signals on other pairs of wires in the same cable.
