First congrats on 40 years of marriage, in this day and age, that's almost unheard of.

First, is a trip possible? Go on a trip to where you had your honeymoon, or a place both of you really want to go to.

If a trip is not possible, then make a scrapbook comprising of all the memories from the past 40 years, first born, second born, wedding ceremony, honeymoon, first date, etc. Add to that a nice romantic candlelight dinner, music, dancing, flowers, and relive the best moments of the past 40 years.

What I did for my parents was have their wedding photo matted and framed and we put a little plaque with their wedding date at the bottom. They had it sitting in a drawer for 40 years. Now it's up on on their wall in the living room and it looks great.

It doesn't sound like much, but my parents are the type that buy what the need and love the sentimental stuff. Plus me and my sisters all live out of state -- we all flew in for the special day.

Don't buy anything. Take him/her to a day spa. Pamper him/her and make them feel great about themself. If money is an issue, create your own dayspa in your home. Prepare a hot bath w/ rose petals. Give your partner a massage (full body). Make the day be just about the two of you together. Prepare dinner together and have a nice romantic meal either w/ candle light or under the stars.

Do something thoughtful. See if you can get some wedding pictures blown up and framed nicely. At this point in their life and marriage, I am sure that they have EVERYTHING. So do something that everyone loves, Pictures. You can never go wrong with pictures of you and your family or of the person you are giving the gift to. That also goes for mother's day too!
