It's called the 'captive market' theory. You can't go out and get stuff, you can only get it there (I mean once you're in there) so they charge more. It's the same at concerts and events.

But also what you pay for your ticket, these days movie theaters pay most of that to the film distributor, so most of the money they make is from the snack bar.

Theatres don't have the storeroom or the climate conditions to keep the candy and popcorn. (Some of them actually store candy in the space behind the screen.) There's a lot of loss in candy because of the heat, critters, and humidity. Some popcorn in made in-house (storing seeds. oil, salt and butter somewhere) or brought in and reheated, so again you're going to have some loss. Throw in theft and loss from the employees and you have a pretty good debt.
A theatre-goer is a "captive consumer" so the management can charge what they please (like the vendors at amusement parks or fairs do) and if one won't pay that, another will. Your best bet is to buy your own candy and snacks and bring them but keep in mind some places will ban them if there's an obvious attempt to carry-in or you make a mess with the wrappers and cans. (Glass is NEVER allowed so don't try it.)

They want to make money by jacking up the price of normal stuff. That's why I go to the Dollar Store to get candy and sneak it in

It's just an easy way for them to be purely capitalistic and make a large profit. They just simply restrict outside food and drink and raise concession prices as high as they want.
I'm a rule breaker. So if I go to the theater on a date, I stop by the supermarket on the way to the movies.

I don't know, it's stupid isn't it? This is why I prefer to watch movies at home and buy the snacks at the store, that way I won't go totally broke! lol

Because if they didn't overprice you then they wouldn't make any money. less and less people are going to theaters and when they do they sneak candy and drinks in with them.

They're not making any money at all from the movies they show. It's how they make their money to stay open and show you the movies.
