Today there are primarily six commodity polymers in use, namely polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene and polycarbonate. These make up nearly 98% of all polymers and plastics encountered in daily life.

Each of these polymers has its own characteristic modes of degradation and resistances to heat, light and chemicals.

There are not only four polymers. There are thousands.

A polymer is simply a molecule that is formed by connecting a chain of molecular units (monomers) end to end. Each monomer may be a very simple structure containing only a few atoms, but the polymer chain could be hundreds or thousands of monomers long. This chain-like structure gives many polymers good tensile strength, so they're used in fabrics.
