Mixed here. I think that now the US is being an a** right now and I can't bear that all the other countries are laughing there heads off and we are blowing up all our young men and women! If we look in the history of the world and our individual people I feel very proud. For example the Civil War, Martin Luther King Jr. , Revolutionary war etc. I shake with anger every time we have another problem with Church and State comes up and we go with the Churches side. We brake our own guidelines and have horrible rules that we forget we have and the come back. One of which hap paned recently when a married woman left her man for another and she was treated like property. I think we continually brake our laws which we pride ourselves in and brag about to the third world countries. Our government loves to dig us a pit and get in but we can't get out! The people like to elect goombas who can't even get a sentence straight ( although it provides good entertainment ) it takes us no where. Although global warming is affecting us right now in very notable ways the republicans like to deny everything Al Gore is saying. We also deny the binding of love to homosexuals because of religion (which again goes against the rules we pride ourselves in ) which p***** me off so much! The fact that I will not in the future not be able to marry a woman ( I am bisexual so I do like men ) whom I love is ridiculous even though I don't believe that this is a "sin".Now to rap up my continuing ranting. No I am not proud to be an American at this moment in time. Wake up America.

I think that I have an interesting insight into this question as I am American who lives in NY but happens to go to boarding school in England. Therefore, I have a lot of experience with observing how the world sees America.

There have been some occasions when I have been embarrassed by the actions of Americans, for example we watched a video in Philosophy class about these weirdos in West Virginia who dance around with snakes in church because apparently the Bible tells them to do so. I don't think any of my classmates connected them with me but I felt very self-conscious throughout the video.
Sometimes I feel as if my 6 years in England have been a constant fight to defend my country. People at my school regularly make fun of strange practices in America that they have heard about and most of all criticise Bush's actions. While commenting to the room at large, they always glance at me, as if hoping that I will pipe up in defense so that they can argue directly.
People ask me what the difference is between the English and Americans. I stringently maintain that according to my experience, there is none. This always gets an interested tilt of the head from an American asker, and unwaveringly shuts an English asker up.

To answer your question :-) Yes I am happy to be an American, but there have been occasions where I have been ashamed of my passport.

I'm an immigrant (legal) and I chose to live in this country and embraced the American way of life. Of course I am proud to be an American. It's the only country I know which respects my civil rights and allows me a reasonable chance to succeed and enjoy the better things in life.

i am proud at what americans have achieved (especially african americans) i am not proud of the fact that we are ridiculed by every other major country because of our beliefs. I am not proud that my family has had to struggle for years because the government thinks that we are "not poor enough" and "not wealthy enough" to offer any help. I am not proud that this country is filled with people that still look at the color of someones skin. I am not proud that the education that my niece recieves is worse than the children on the other side of town. I am not proud that our government believes that english should be the official language when this country was founded with multiculturism in mind. Does this anawer your question?

I live in the USA , but I'm not too proud of it. I feel like this country have done some ugly things to others, and i know its not the people's fault, but the arrogance it is. I've talked to many Americans who doesn't shyt about their own history and still think "United States is the greatest nation in the world".... its sad to live in ignorance.

Well yes. I would be proud to be whatever I was.....I mean hating yourself to be an American? You would spend your LIFE going over that. So you might as well get used to it.
I don't like the American attitude though. I could spend the rest of my days without having to put up with the stereotypical American ****-hole.
=D

I find it silly to take pride in something that I was born into. Am I proud to have fully participated in the representative system to the best of my abilities and working for what I believe and/or know to be right? Sure, but blind patriotism has always been an overly dangerous mode of thought, in my opinion.

Damn straight I am. Reason? Freedom. My husband is deployed and the things he has seen has made us both realize how truly lucky we are to be here in America. Everyone questions the war right now, but the news does not tell you everything. He has seen what the people over there are going through and almost all of them are grateful for what the US is trying to do for them. I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN.

Not really.

I love my country and the opportunities it offers, but I hate what people become while living here.

So, you could say I am proud to live in America, but not proud to be an American and to share a label with everyone else who lives here.

Does it sound like I think I'm better than everyone else?

Yeah but I wish that a lot of people weren't as superficial as they are sometimes and since this country is known as the melting pot, it would be nice if people would acknowledge the fact and tolerate it more so we could all get along better with each other. Also, our politics is kind of f'ed up if you ask me. I feel like it's true when people say that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
