Don't know if this is right, but here's a shot at it:
5p +9
- p +8
________
4p +1

Does that look reasonable to you?? 5p -1p =4p, and 9-8=1

hi ya.....

(5p+9)-(p+8)=5p+9-p-8(Remove the Bracket)
=5p-p+9-8(i.e.,Arrange p terms and numbers together)
=4p+1
