Im thinking of advertising for musicians on myspace or something, because I really wana start a band.
I live in Australia, and dont really know anyone whos into music like me and im not really friends with anyone outside of school.
Ive got a year left of school (im 17), and I think it would be really fun to start a band and have random gigs and stuff.
Any tips? Please.
I met this guy whose canadian but its hard when he is in canada and im in australia.
Another guy I talked to said most guys would never be in a band with a girl(aka me) as the front singer. Is this true?
I write lyrics and play SOME guitar, lol, im not very good. But yeah. Are there many 17-20 year olds who would be interested or not?

I have no idea. lol, help?

Yeah putting adds out on myspace might be a good idea. Although starting a band with people your already freinds with makes things a lot easier. Also when starting a band its usually okay to have one person whose really a good and the rest isn't as good. So just because your not good at guitar yet doesn't mean you cant become at least a good rhythm one soon. It really helps if you have the same idea for a direction of a band also... Ive been in a band for four years so I'm not just talking out my *** ha ha...

Also anyone who doesn't want to be in a band with you because your a girl is really ******* retarded... and should be beaten with sticks.

As a musician, I have gone through this process before, and this is the best advice i could give.

But first i gotta say, canada aint gonna cut it.

1)Find experienced musicians who have previously been in bands or some other musically associated program. Myspace and flyers are a good way. Advertise.
2)If you are serious about this band, its going to take a lot of time and effort. Maybe more than you realize. Depending on what your goals are.
3)I disagree with what your friend told you about being a female vocalist. If your good, and an impressive lyricist, theres no doubt you´ll find a place.
4)Yes, there would be people in the 17 to 20 range who w ould probably love to join your band. but yet you have to realize, you still gotta be on the same page.
Jam bands a different story

Hope this helped.
Have fun and enjoy the gift of music =D

It's gonna be tough to really find other people until you're 18. When you get to 18 you'll be able to check out live gigs of bands you like, and by default mix with other people at the show who like the same thing.

Until then, try: www.fasterlouder.com.au It has a forum dedicated to each state, and also dedicated musicians where you can list your influences and ask for some other members.

And also........that guy that said he would never be in a band with a girl as the lead singer is pretty retarded and probably knows bugger all about music anyway, to say something like that. Anyone who says things like that is automatically discounting such great bands as: Sonic Youth. Yeah Yeah Yeah's. Deerhoof. etc. etc. etc. etc. and should be avoided at all costs.

Good luck, and have fun!

you first need a good lineup. A drummer/percussionist a piano keyboard player. Up to 3 guitars as low as 1 I recommend 2. An acoustic and electric. and a bass guitar. A lead singer and a few backing voices.

Then you need publicity. You can by add space online or even billboards don't run too high.
You need good equipment

Now all that isn't necessary but most good bands have that.

As for that boy who made that comment. He is actually unfortunately right. But that doesn't mean you have to let that stop you. Prove yourself and earn respect and you'll have a band trust me. I've been playing bass for different small bands and one of the band leaders i played for was a girl and she was spectacular. So keep your chin up and build your band.

Talent is always good to have. But hard work can help cover up where your talents end.

Good equipment is always nice. But talent can make poor equipment bearable.

Friends who share your musical vision are great to have. Otherwise you're band is breaking up before it's even together.

Probably the most important thing is dedication. You can always save up for bigger/better equipment or hold auditions for random amazing musicians. But if everybody in your band is not willing and able to put in the required time (and enjoy doing it!), well, I think you know what will happen.

okay first off
have you ever heard off kittie, flyleaf, otep, evanescence, jack off jill, all have chick singers and all are flipping good so that guy is stupid
um im doing the same in looking for a band and what im doing is posting flyers around town(your school works too)
that say looking for musicians
give the type of music you wanna play and what you play and the kind of musicians you need such as bass, or drums, etc
and have lil tabs at the bottom with your number so they can tear it off and call you
and if i lived in australia i would so look you up and join your band
well good luck

all you really need in a band is a bassist, a guitarist, vocalist and a drummer. you don't exactly have to be the same ages. you just need to enjoy music and you have to have cooperation and the will to make it as a band. i should know...i have a band. :)
