First were the dishes rinsed of major food items before putting em in. Pull the bottom rack out and check the drain screen, is it clogged or clean, and is the water draining?
When it was loaded did the spray arm turn smoothly or was it blocked by a knife or fork sticking out the bottom rack? turn it on then open the door quickly to see it turn. Maybe take the spray arm out and clean it out inside by shaking it over the sink...you can often see stuff blocking the holes in the arm...so it doesn't turn or clean well....you don't need a new DW until all else fails

If it isn't a hard water problem (well water), it could be the water temperature. Most dishwasher detergents need at least 130 to 140 degrees to dissolve. It could be the heater in your machine that is not working. Even some liquids need this temp.

check and make sure the drain in the dishwasher is not clogged with dirty water.
Jet dry will help with hard spots. and always make sure the Dry button is flipped to the on position.
When loading it make sure you are not blocking the center hole where the arm comes up to spray the dishes.

Do you have a water softener. It may need more salt. Try rinsing them under water and drying them the old fashoned way.
