My boyfriend says that this is required in California. I've never heard of it, though. Can anyone shed some light

you have to go through a mediator if you have children. Other than that, no. You don't go through counseling unless you want to.

I didn't have to and I've lived in California most of my life. No one I know has ever had to and most everyone I know has lived in California all of their lives. You're not even required to go through mediation if neither party wants to. I never was required to go through mediation.
