I'm not sure I could give you some specific definition. I think it's just that the drum beats are more booming with a sharper snare, the guitar riffs are harder edged with more distortion, and the basslines are heavier.
It's interesting that the original rock and roll (Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Buddy Holly) sounded more like country music sounds now.

Rock music involves guitars, bass, drums and vocals. It gets a point across. The band members have to be talented and hard working.
