I used to read HP fanfic ALL THE TIME when I was 13. I was really addicted and it began to taint my few of the cannon. I grew out of it when I turned 14. I'm 17 now, and if I ever do read a fanfic again, it won't be until the last book and the last movie have come out and I'm completely starved of Harry Potter.
Like Kechi said, a lot of it is crappy, but I've read a few good ones. One was a Remus/Tonks story and one was a Snape/Mary Sue story that ACTUALLY kept Snape in character. That's a pretty major thing in my book, since Severus is so mean that its hard to write a romance for him without taking him out of character. If I ever do read fanfic again, I will try to find this one first. I don't remember the title or author but I do remember the Mary Sue character called him The Great Snapeini at one point.
As to whether or not you should stop reading it, that's up to you. Perhaps you should try to cut down on the amount of time you spend reading it though. Find another addictive hobby, like knitting, or reading real books.

I think it's obsessive. I used to write only HP fan fic, but lost all inspriation for the stories. None of them were good anyway. I've got over a hundred fav stories on fanfiction.net, and I've written 14 separate stories on the site. I do write slash, but it's the manga Loveless, and it's supposed to be slash. If it isn't slash, then you're an idiot. It's up to you to stop reading and/or writing. Just read some real books along with the fanfiction. Keeps a healty balance, and maybe try your hand at original works even though it's a lot harder than FanFiction.

If you visit the site more the twice a day and those visits include you reading stories for the next three to what hours then yes, it is obsessive.
I myself sometimes read other people's works on fanfic.net but it usually takes me a while to find anything good. Apparently the only thing people known how to write today are slash and cliche highschool drama's involving the canon characters topped with a few Mary-Sue's and self inserts.
Boring, unorginal, and stupid.
Still, there are some good fanfic that might take hours to find but once you do you've struck gold. As for writing, I prefer to go with orginal works myself - after all, I see no reason to further someone else's chacrter's story on my own accord. However it's really up to you and your preferences if you continue to write them or not.

it's obsessive but let see, I switch fandoms a lot. I write slash and I do it a lot but I switched from hp to gw and a few others. Some times the fandoms get boring. Ther's only so many plot cliches you can read like gasp Harry is a veela...Draco is a veela and so on.

Well, it is obsessive if you consider the time and effort (and thought) you spend on a series to write fanfics. But it's not awful, all of the time.
Others might even say you're practicing your writing skills by writing. ^_^

It may be obsessive, but it's harmless and fun, like being a fan of a particular sports team. If you enjoy it then there's no reason to give it up.
Try reading some of the fic by Mariner, she's very good - http://www.fanfiction.net/u/7702/Mariner

If it gets in the way of you doing anything else, then yes, it's obsessive. Otherwise, no.
