Well, I collect ancient and medieval European coins, and have always been fascinated by the way in which coins that are collected today chronicle a number of the key events in ancient European history.

The conquests of Alexander the Great, the death of Julius Caesar, the decline of the Roman Empire and the emergence of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) empire, the cultural and religious changes, and much -- all chronicled (or otherwise evidenced) in coins. There is much to write about here, if you like history, antiquities and fine artwork (in general, the Greek coins feature great artistry, while the Roman coins highlight political intrigue).

Just FYI, ancient coins were minted in huge numbers over a vast period of time, and today many varieites can be found at modest cost.

The series of books by Wayne Sayles on ancient coin collecting talks a lot about the coins and the history.
