The kids consider the thing a God, but is there anything else to it? Maybe a surprise twist?

I don't know....but, he sure was not well pleased with Malachi!

"HE WANTS YOU TOO, MALACHI! HE WANTS YOU TOO!"

I saw it in the theater (showing my age) and I 'bout peed my pants when Isaac reappeared with that line.

;)

Actually, many of Stephen King's books deal with an 'ancient evil'. So, 'He who walks behind the rows' may have just been some sort of malevolent spirit taking advantage of it's surroundings. King has quite the knack for tapping into one's primal fears.

I love Stephen King. ;)

I was always of the opinion that it was a nature spirit of sorts; Pan, Jack in the Green, etc.; but of a malevolent nature. John Barleycorn as mean drunk, if you will. But I've also heard some fairly convincing arguments for the devil, as well; rooted in some of Crowley's writings. "Behind the rows", a bit like "sub-rosa" or "said in secrecry and held as such". Even creepier if you never know for certain, then your imagination runs a bit and it can create exactly what frightens you more than any outside influence. Pleasant dreams.

I'm not positive, but I think it may have been an older version of The Dark Man (Randall Flagg) from "The Stand": If you remember, or if you read the book, all of the people who envision the dark man see him in the corn first.

: )
