Bad synchro. In a tranny that old it would probably be a bad idea to start fixing problems. Better to go for a rebuild if you want to keep the truck.

Keep in mind that your reverse gear and 1st gear are on the same transmission gear. If you have a bent synchronizer in your tranny it could possibly cause this. How is your pressure plate and throwout bearing look like? You could need another clutch.
Your tranny in your 86 was built really well, so i really dont' hope its the problem.. Many shops will inspect your clutch plate for free.

The clutch does not fully release obviously. try bleeding it, Then inspect the firewall for pushing away. theres a bulletin.
Check the pedal crossshaft and the nut attaching the pedal to the cross shaft. then check the slave and master. some drip and lose pressure ever so slightly.
It's all a real pain, but you can do it !

could be the clutch needs bleeding or the clutch plate is worn, look for fluid leaks around the clutch master and slave cylinder. if you find no problems change the hydraulic fluid, might not hurt to change the gear oil as well.if none of these fix the problem you may need to fit a new clutch.

there is a switch on the clutch pedal that tells the car not to do this unless your foot is on the brake its provably out
it easy to change and the part is cheap look on your clutch pedal up under the dash it has 3 to 5 wires running into it with a spring and arm that moves when you push in the clutch

if it is grinding when you go to put it in its probably the clutch not disengaging all the way which could be a problem with the master or slave cylinder or the clutch disk itself if you let it go long enough it will start to happen when you go to put it in 1st gear also

you may need to bleed the clutch or the clutch may be warn to much it is posible that the trany is in need of repair but always go for the least expensive repair first such as bleeding the clutch also you may want to check the bell housing bolts to make sure they are all tite good luck

Try double clutching. If it works, you'll know the synchro is bad.
