With our standards your tank is a 40 gallon tank

There are several reasons your water can be green and I'm very sure that you have algae growth in there
1. you have your tank sittin in the sun (number 1 reason to have algae growth)
2. You don't have proper filtration in your tank

First of all I would take out your turtles and scrub your tank down with hot water and an algae scrabber, until it is really really clean
Then you can fill up your tank with regular tapwater (i have 2 turtles of my own so I know what I'm talking abot) about half way to 3/4 of tank, get a filter that goes inside of the tank, like this one here

and you also need a basking place for your turtle like the following that your turtles can get out of the water and dry out

I have my tank setup since about 9 months and I haven't had any problems with it, I didn't even have to do a water change yet, ;-) it's crystall clear, does not smell and my turtles are healthy. The only thing I do once a month is filling up the water that evaporates.

The only thing you are suppose to get for your turtles for the wintermonths from Oktober to April is a special heater as follows for them
http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441814890&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030050&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1184565533452&itemNo=41&Ntt=turtles&In=All&previousText=turtles&N=2

One more thing, please don't feed them outside of the water, it's very unhealthy for them, they need the water to digest the food easier.
I feed them with the usuall turtle food you can buy and every other day I give them dried shrimps (they love the shrimps)

Hope that helps, any more questions feel free to email me

Good luck

Investing in a water filter for the turtle tank would help keep the water non green. Also not just changing the water but cleaning the algae off the tank helps keep the water non green

My turtle lived in a tank with two filters but also we got an algea eater sucker fish thing. it lived with the turtle for a very long time, 1yr approx. The turtle was small at the time and the suckerfish was also kinda small but they grew up together. I fed the turtle enough I guess that it never ate the suckerfish. I had a big rock pile for the turtle to climb too and the suckerfish hid often. I never used chemicals, just cleaned the tank with a draining tube/vacuum thing. I finally put them outside in a giant plastic storage box and it turned green fast if I didn't keep it out of the sunlight and I drained it usually half and filled it weekly. I fed him in a separate plastic box of water to help keep his home clean too. Good luck!!

Had the same thing happen to my tank and I was freaking out but not to worry I have an answer for you. Its probably just algae, go the pet store and get algae destroyer it should take care of it. You might have to use it a couple of times. But it worked for me.

You can get a soft bristled tooth brush and gently scrub its shell with no soap. You should probably check for shell rot which has squishy smelly bits on the shell.
