After a failed attempt with rescuing a female betta from petco...I am now the proud mom of a very handsome and active male. It's been 24 hours and there is the beginnings of a bubble nest, and he is eating well and reacting to my presence. I have noticed that the water temp has increased 2 degrees during the day, 75-77. He is in a 2 gallon tank on his lonesome. I live in so. calfornia, at this time of year it gets really hot during the day, and cool in the evening. (20-30 degree changes). Is this going to stress him out? Should I put on a heater for the evening? Should I move him to my a/c bed room? Should I wait and see if he shows signs of stress from this environment...as he is very happy and active right now.

I'm a new, obsessively researched betta enthusiast...and would appreciate any input!

Your Betta will thrive in a heated filtered tank. The temperature should stay very close to the same temperature at all times. Betta's are tropical fish and need to be in heated tanks ranging from 76-82 F. I have mine in a community tank set at 77 and he does well. Remember to change the water often in the bowl if it isn't filtered.

Hi, I live in ca as well and know exactly what you're talking about
I have my betta in a 5 gallon tank with a heater, and I actually have to constantly turn it down every other day because the water gets warmer
In the winter you're definately going to need a heater, but it's not neccessary for the summer because the temperature in of the water doesn't cool down quiet as much, and your roomtemperature doesn't change your water at night that much that it would affect your betta

Hope that helps

Good luck

Hmm, you said 2 degrees, 75-77 during the day, but when does this 20-30 degree change occur...? That would be quite a range and not good for the fish to fall below 70. Upper 70's is best; 75-79 degrees is best. Too cool can result in stress, and eventually disease. So if it's getting that cool at night, then I'd get the heater, and leave him where he is.

Betta like it warm so room temp should be good. he would really like a small bowl with some live floating green plants and even some small snails. I have a Betta that is going on 4 and I understand that is old for Betta's. He lives in a small round bowl that gets changed weekly. These fish need little care and do best just hanging out. I also found the it is easier to move the fish with my hand then a net. My hand does not rip his fins. Just be careful cause they like to jump. Enjoy your new bud. He will be happy to notice you too.

Just keep him at room temperature.
