You can sell it on e-bay, donate it to a charity, give it to some needy friends kids, etc. However, take it to a computer store and have the hard drive scrubbed so your personal information isn't stolen, or buy software to do it for you, but it is best to have someone knowledgeable in the process do it for you. You can trade it in for a credit at your local computer store (if they do that, some do and some don't). Or you can do as others suggested, have the drive reconfigured to be a portable storage device for your laptop. There are companies out there that salvage the gold connector points from the motherboard and other boards in the computer, so you have lots of options.

All you need is the hard drive. take that out, sell the rest, throw it away or donate it to a charity.
next, purchase one of these for 25 bucks:

this is an enclosure you can put your desktop's hard drive in and turn it into a USB external drive that you can plug into your laptop and use as a second hard drive. You can use it for back ups, whatever. That's about the only way you are going to be able to connect that drive to your laptop. It's too big to fit into the laptop directly.

Some people use older computers as a storage device, even for internet. I only know that experts know how to do that.
You can recycle it. Some people buy older computers in order to sell it elsewhere such as Latino America.

You could take the hard drive out, buy an external case for it, connect it to your laptop for extra storage. You can buy those external hard drive cases at COMPUSA.

Go to your local computer store and ask if this would be possible. I was going to suggest you ask if you could trade it in for a new laptop, but you already mentioned that you own one.
