If this word is going to be banned then I can think of a mile long list of other words that need to be banned too. Unless they plan to have cops walking around issuing tickets to every person who says it, I don't think it was banned. Unfortunately (at times) there is still a little thing called "Freedom of Speech" whether what people say is right or not.

Who is "they?" and how can anyone ban a word? I personally dont see what the big deal is, the blacks use it all the time so why is it such a bad word? I wish people would come to realize there is a different between black people and *******. Then maybe so many people wouldnt be offended.

They didn't ban the word all together. If you are referencing to the false burial in Detroit then it was a symbolic way to get rid of the word from our culture through encouragement. I highly doubt it will work though thanx to the saturation of the word in our black culture and youth through music and the media.

They banned all books containing the word from being used in the public school system, because it is a racial slur and an insult.

No... some city talked about it awhile back, but nothing ever happened.
It's free speech... if they were to ban the N word, they would have to ban every other racial slur... which will never happen.

Who cares if it's banned or not....Regardless of whether it's against the rules, it's still a vile and a rude word, I've never understood why ANYBODY would want to use that word.

nobody can ban any word - this is america & we do have freedom of speech; unfortunately we have to endure stupid words to keep us off that slippery slope...
some folks did have a ceremony to "bury" the word forever, though

Because it's racist,crude and cruel.
We need to all care for one another in this crazy world. If we took the time to understand one another and care about each others feelings, this world would be a lot better place to live in
Too many people are too quick to judge and condemn.
We're all God's children and we're all important to Him.

The term ***** means black in most latin derived languages. The term you refer to was a slang word derived as an insult by early african american slave owners. It was meant as a derogitory word. However, many african americans use it today as a common identity. I personally don't agree that they should but it's their choice to refer to each other in a derogetory manner but as any other race I find it very distasteful to use that term. Not only is it insulting but it's associated with prejudice towards one ethnic group.
