I defrosted my upright, stand-alone freezer by unplugging it and leaving the door open; now when I close the door, the gasket won't seal and the door won't stay closed (I had to tape it shut with duct tape). It was working fine before I defrosted it. What has gone wrong and how do I fix it?

ZSome freezers have a feature that actually suck in when the door is closed..thus forming a seal...after it gets back to normal cold tempature..of course duct taped so it will...try simply closing it then and see if it will..if not possibly you simply leaned on the door and got a little'warp" in it which is no major problem...put a flashlight inside the freezer and simply close the door to, hold it if necessary, but not with pressure..look around the seal and see if you see light thru it..if so you can take a freezer door, with your hands , usually caddy cornered..and gentlybend the door down towards the area that you see light from..the door doesn't actually bend, but they are built to adjust minor adjustments this way..if this fails..time for a new strip

Servicing the Door Gasket

When a refrigerator gasket (usually a rubber seal around the door) becomes hard or cracked, its seal is broken, and the unit's efficiency drops sharply. Test the door gasket for leaks by placing a dollar bill between the gasket and the door jamb and closing the door. Pull the bill out. If it offers some resistance, chances are the gasket fits properly. If the bill comes right out, or falls out, the gasket is faulty and should be replaced. Test the gasket at several locations around the door. Before you replace the gasket, check the door hinges for leakage.

Why is there a lot of frost built up inside the freezer? A frost build-up inside the freezer usually means that there is a problem in the self-defrost system. You may even have damaged door gaskets. When you open the freezer door, you also let in a blast of warm, often humid air. This moisture usually freezes onto the evaporator coils immediately.

I just had this problem fixed with the repairman. My refrigerator is still under warranty. Turns out, it wasn't the gasket at all. Opening and closing the doors (I have a big family so it seems that's always happening) over time will cause the doors to become unaligned. He unscrewed the doors and realigned them. He told me that in addition to this common problem, some people have floors that are unleveled which can cause the same problem. In that case a shim put in the appropriate area under the fridge should adjust the alignment too. My solution means no more leaking around the gasket or water pouring out of the fridge. Now the refrigerator and the freezer do what they are supposed to do.

Evidently got water or something in the seal; Yo u will have to replace the gasket which is no big deal.
Some of them just fit around the door and on older models they have screws. Take your old gasket along to the hardware store to be sure you get the right size.
