On pure guitar mechanics, Steve Vai has Satch and Yngwie beat. He is the most versatile, learned, and well-rounded of the three as well. I'll lump them into some categories, best to worst, so you can get a better picture of how they stack up against each other.

Alternate picking: Yngwie by a smidgen, Vai, Satch.

Legato: Satch, Vai, Yngwie.

Tapping: Vai by a huge margin, Satch, Yngwie.

Playing dynamics: Vai, Yngwie, Satch.

Sweep Picking: Yngwie, Vai, Satch.

Whammy/vibrato bar control: Vai by a huge margin, Yngwie, Satch.

Vibrato: Yngwie, Satch, Vai

Most challenging music: Vai by a huge margin, Yngwie, Satch.

Fretboard knowledge: Satch by a smidgen, Vai, Yngwie.

Musical knowledge: Vai, Satch, Yngwie.

Most naturally gifted: Yngwie by a huge margin, Vai, Satch.

My final verdict; Yngwie is the most natural and aggressive player with scary picking technique and a killer vibrato. Satriani is the most fluid and smooth player with great knowledge, and an ear for catchy melody. Steve Vai is the most well rounded technician of the three, and has a quirky sense of timing and melody to go with his vast musical knowledge.

id have to go with satriani, i find him to be much more original and has the ability to play the guitar in many different styles. malmsteen is an awesome player but most of his stuff sounds the same, its all the same style, satriani blends a lot more genres and style then the other two players, plus satriani taught vai how to play....

Satriani all the way! after all he did teach Vai. Vai is good but Satch is King and i have not found anyone that could de-throne him. he does have some rivals but they all come in a very distant second in my opinion.

malmsteen is a good player but all his stuff sorta sounds the same. plus he is a total egotist and that just makes his music ugly to me.

I have never had a chance to hear any of them. Stuck in a time warp! No one comes close to Jimmy Page!
