A backpack is the easiest way to carry a load. It also frees your hands to do other things, browsing etc. Get a light one made of fabric so it doesn't contribute to the weight. Wide fabric straps will reduce shoulder stress. I use them on every trip, toss in water bottles, snacks, maps, cameras and things. Then when I make a purchase or other such souvenir I have a place to put it and my hands are still free and the weight is over both shoulders instead of just one.
