I have traveled to Denver many times. I lived out there for a while and hope to return some day...
Outside of Golden, Co. take a drive up Lookout Mountain, at night the city lights are gorgeous! Plenty of places to pull over.
West on the interstate is Mt. Evans (by Idaho Springs) The veiws there are unforgetable too. On the way up, there is a place to pull over and picinic, if you want. The waterfall is so nice...my kids and I walk through it, on the rocks and it is great for photos!
On Colfax Ave. there is a resturant called Casa Bonita. Its a tall, pinkish building that sets back a little bit, but cant really miss it. The prices are reasonible. Its kinda like fast food with a great atmosphere! Inside there is a tall waterfall and while you eat, you watch plays and a cliff diver that accually dives down into the pool. Also has a game room, gift shop, cave like settings and you can walk behind the waterfall. (tell them that its somebodys birthday :) They have a website.
The small towns west of Denver, like Idaho Springs and Georgetown have neat houses. There look miniture. Outside of Idaho Springs is a road that takes you up a mountaing caleed the "OH MY GOD ROAD" Only take this if your fearless. We took it once by accident!! But hey, we'll always remember it. lol
In George town they offer a train ride through the mountains. And of course, they have neat little shops.
Red Rocks amphitheatre (Im sure I misspelled that) Is one of the neatest places Ive ever seen. You dont have to see a show there.
Heritage Square hasa bunch a shops and a Alpine Slide that slides down the foothill. Its fun.
Hope you have agreat time no matter what you decide to do.

In the city itself, there are a number of outdoor festivals in Civic Center Park, free concerts in City Park, free movies on Filmore in Cherry Creek, etc. Check out www.westword.com and click on Entertainment to see what's going on in the city at the time you're going to be here.
Nevertheless, what you probably want to do is go to the mountains - that's what the Mile High City is all about. You could drive west and visit Summit County where the ski areas are - lots to do in the summer and very pretty. Boulder is a fun place to be outdoors and lots of nice restaurants. Rocky Mountain National Park is only 90 minutes away and has some of the most awesome scenery in the world.
If you're into outdoor activities like biking or rafting, Denver and the surrounding areas are the best. Figure out what you like to do and it will be available here.

Take a little road trip to Colorado Springs (about an hour south of Denver) - you can drive or take the Cog Railway up to the top of Pike's Peak, you can go to the Garden of the Gods, visit the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, go to the Cave of the Winds or visit Seven Falls. If you go a little further south to Canon City you can visit the Royal Gorge & Suspension Bridge or go white water rafting in that area.
