Debit cards, there are ATM's all over Europe. Travelers checks are getting harder and harder to cash.

I just went to Europe over winter break and took all travelers checks..this was a mistakes. Bring some cash, because you will need it right away. Other then that use debit cards, you can buy things directly in some places (as long as it has the visa or mc logo) or use them at any ATM machines for a minimal fees per withdrawal. I would just check to see if your bank here in the US has a sister branch in Europe, because they will charge you the least fees this way. I also did this when I went to Taiwan and this is the way to go, that way you don't have too much cash on you at any one time. Also with travelers checks you will loose a lot of money due to currency exchange rates. I would bring at most 100$ in travelers checks for emergencies and keep them in a secure place, that way if you don't need them then you can get your all your money back when you get home.

Have fun!!

Depending your age(if your under 26!) there exist a special train ticket that will travel you trough whole Europe, it also exist for older but then it's more expensive, still the cheapest if you really go from one country to a other.
Cash: I would say bring credit cards, there easy to buy in shops(visa) but not all except MasterCard.
Here in Belgium you also have trouble to get money out of the wall with visa-MasterCard's, there more here with normal bankcards, so bring for sure cash with also.
Travel checks I don't recommend so much, yes there safe but it's hassle to exchange them(you would loose time).

You should only bring enough cash for an emergency and little things like tips and stuff. Otherwise, use a visa or MasterCard. They are very safe and accepted all over the world. Make sure that you bring at least 2 different cards though and keep them in separate places, (like leaving one in your hotel room safe, in case the main one gets lost or stolen.) You always want a back-up. If possible its always good to take one visa and one MasterCard just in case a certain card is preferred more than the other in a certain area. If you don't have both types, its not really a big deal. just make sure you bring at least 2 cards! Make sure you notify your bank at least a week a head of time that you are going on vacation out of the country so that they don't think fraudulent purchases are being placed on your account. (I can't stress that point enough). I don't really recommend travelers cheques as your main source of money because there are so many places that do not accept them anymore, due to an increase in counterfeits. Plus if you lose them or they get stolen, it takes more than a few business days to get them replaced. By that time, your trip is likely to be over and you still don't have your money back. you wouldn't want to be stranded.

I took some cash to get from the airport, train station etc for transport to my hotel or whereever I was staying.

After that I just used my debit or credit card....you get a good exchange rate at the MANY ATM's around the place....

I also kept some money for emergencies (I was living in the UK at the time so had some pounds) in my suitcase ( well hidden) or in my money bag...but I kept it separate from my purse/carry round bag in case I got it stolen......
