It is spelled the way it sounds. And it comes from Greek.

It actually is -- in English, the correct phonetic pronunciation of "ph" is /f/ -- the o is a long vowel sound because it only has one consonant after it -- this is generally indicative of a long vowel sound; however, since it is English, there are always exceptions.

I don't know how you think it sounds, but it is spelled the way it sounds. The "ph" is an "f" sound, as in telephone.
